[Help regarding magikarp]

I just bought a lvl 5 magikarp from the sales man and I can't even battle with it. Any ideas on how to evolve it?

Generally speaking, Nature, Ability, IVs, and EVs do not make much of a difference when going through story. For Gyarados you'd want high Speed and Atk and for Gengar you'd want high Speed and Spatk.

The rest of your team can be filled with any fast and strong-hitting Pokémon. A few examples are: Alakazam, Dragonite, Jolteon, Arcanine, Rapidash, Dodrio, Scyther, Pinsir. In addition to Kanto-native Pokémon, you can find and trade for many Pokémon native to other regions.

Would some of you suggest a good team that I should aim for in Kanto? Also mention the stats it should have. I am currently in Vermillion city btw. Any help is appreciated.

So I heard phantump spawn in the vermilion graveyard at night but I also heard it requires membership. Wanted to ask if I need a membership to catch pokemon like phantump.
