I want him to be an infernape but he's level 99 so he'll just become a monferno if I use rare candy on him so maybe he'll become an infernape or he'll just become a monferno then I want him to be an Infernape :(

I used a rare candy on it when it was lvl 97 and then it didn't evolve when it was 98. Then I used rare candy again and it didn't evolve when it was 98. Then I used rare candy again and it didn't evolve when it was 99. It didn't evolve anymore. What's that?
