Something that helped me was finding out when to allow a pokemon to evolve (as they lvl up faster without evolution). It depends on what you want, though. Higher base stats or shorter gaps between levels. Also, some Pokemon learn moves that they can't in their evolved forms, so be aware of that o:

As far as tips, I would say conserve as much money as you possibly can, a lot of the key items vailable free in the original games cost money here, such as the bike costing 75k, it's quite a pain to gather as a new player, so try and keeping spending to a minimal!
