Sorry for the inconvenience.

 

Unfortunately, you cannot use pokemon that are not from the current region you're in or have not finished that region. You're only allowed to use pokemon that were caught in the current region you're in. You may start using pokemon from previous regions you've completed after you've gotten the 8th badge.

 

For example, you were given a Sinnoh Chimchar from a friend, and you're still in Johto, then you can't have that Chimchar in your party until you've reached Sinnoh. However, after obtaining the 8th badge in Blackthorn, you can start using pokemon from the Kanto region, such as your starter.
