ok first off, what are ev's?

ev stands for effort value. they are points you can get form defeating pokemon in PvE that will increase the stat value of your pokemon. you can have a max of 510 ev's total per pokemon and 252 per stat; (some games it's 255, but the stats go up every 4 points @100 so the last 3 are useless. at low levels you will find your stat does not go up every 4 ev's. their is a mathematical equation behind the scenes:

what this means is @level 50 your stat will go up every 8 ev's and @100 it will go up every 4. with a even iv @level 50 the stat will only increase up to 248 ev's.

if you are thinking "what does this mean? i don't get it" you are not alone.

the simplified version is more ev's=higher stat

every pokemon gives a different kind and amount of ev's when you defeat them. some give more then one kind. the ev's are listed on the bulbapedia page of the pokemon. their is currently no where in game to my knowledge where they are displayed.

you can use macho brace to doubles your ev gain. when you kill a gyarados with no brace you get 2 attack ev's. when you kill it with a brace you get 4.

you can also use exp shares to share ev's. when a pokemon defeats a pidgey it gets 1 speed ev. when a pokemon defeats a pidgey and every member of the party is holding a exp share, everyone gets a speed ev. you can use multiple exp shares in combination with macho brace to ev up to 6 pokemon at a time if they need the same ev's.

now if you are asking "what difference is there between a ev train and non ev trained pokemon" you are not alone. a ev trained pokemon will always be stronger then a non ev trained pokemon all other things being equal.

in short, ev training will not always make the difference between defeat and victory, but sometimes it will. this guide should help you start winning more often if you are not already ev training.
