if you lose against a gym leader you will no longer get EXP from them

You don't get experience points if you've already lost against that trainer/Gym Leader.

I advise to level up your Pokemon if you're facing difficulties.

 

This is no glitch at all, it's meant to be like that in order to avoid so called EXP-Boosts.

 

Good luck with beating all the gyms!
