So Red shows up at the Pokemon League Reception Gate and is there purely to stomp you. :Cry: I think he is intended as an unwinnable encounter.

But I almost beat him with my sub-par pokemon, thanks to a lot of luck xD

I can't see any reason why he wouldn't be beatable. I also got to the blastoise part with pretty bad pokes at that time. First 3 go down easily with a gengar (confuse ray and curse) and im guessing that with a bit of luck and a army of gengars, beating the last 3 would be possible as well :P
