Bulba's a great starter. You'll have an easier time defeating Brock and Misty.

Catch as many Pokemon as you can.

You get cut from Vermillion City. Go to the ship SS Anne and complete the quests there. The captain gives it to you.

Battle all the NPC trainers. Your Pokemon will need all the experience they can get to battle the gym leaders (they're harder in this game). Plus they give money.

Use Help chat if you have any questions. Don't be shy. There are plenty of people there that want to help new players.
