I just finished Kanto and I was very new when I started PRO so I never cared about IV's and EV's. I wanted a Geodude so I caught the first Sturdy one that came my way. I'm planning to be smarter in Johto, so I was wondering if there is a way to tell which low lvl Pokemon is worth keeping, and which is not.

 

So, to keep it simple, let's say I want to catch a Rattata. How do I decide which one's good enough at such low levels? Is there any way to do that or will I only find out at higher levels?
