HI :Grin:

 

My English teacher has made us learn SBAC sentence structures for the last 2 years now. Just like Shamacs health tips, this post is will be tips on how to make proper sentences. Hope its helpful. :y:

 

1. Subject, a/the..., verb

 

ex. Sophia, a girl afraid of clowns, somehow still likes the circus.

 

 

 

2a. Subject Verb BOYFANS* Verb

No subject after the FANBOYS = no comma

 

ex. Sofia loves the circus but is afraid of clowns.

 

 

2b. Subject Verb, FANBOYS Subject Verb

 

Subject after the FANBOYS = comma

 

ex. Sofia loves the circus, but she is afraid of clowns.

 

 

3a. Subject, who/which......, Verb

 

Unnecessary phrase in the middle = commas

 

ex. Sofia, who is afraid of clowns, enjoys the circus.

 

 

3b. Subject who is.... Verb

 

When phrase in the middle is essential for understanding = no commas

 

ex. The girl who is afraid of clowns still loves the circus.

 

 

4a. Adjective ...., Subject Verb

 

Starts w/ adjectival phrase, followed by comma and the subject

 

ex. Afraid of clowns, Sofia nevertheless loves the circus.

 

 

4b. _ing ..., Subject Verb

 

Starts w/ Adverbial phrase, followed by comma and the subject

 

ex. Insisting that she hates clowns, Sofia still wants to go to the circus.

 

 

5a. Subordinating Conjunction Subject Verb, Subject Verb

 

Subordinating conj. @ beginning = comma

 

ex. Even though Sofia is afraid of clowns, she still likes the circus.

 

 

5b. Subject Verb Subordinating Conjunction Subject Verb

 

Subordinating conj. is in the middle = no comma

 

ex. Sofia loves the circus even though she is afraid of clowns.

 

 

6 ___ing Verb

 

Starts with -ing action followed by verb

 

ex. Smoking causes cancer

ex. Clowning around indoors got them in trouble.

 

 

* BOYFANS= But Or Yet For And Nor So
