As stated, if you google there are websites on the forum and externally that can tell you whether or not the server is down.

 

To reduce crashes, avoid running other things in the background of your phone/pc. Extra programs running in the background will slow your performance down. You can also make sure that all your graphics drivers are up to date and working properly. Similarly, don't have any programs that use up internet bandwidth (Spotify, Twitch.tv, Netflix, YouTube, etc.) as they tend to hog most of your bandwidth causing any blip from your ISP/router/modem to potentially cause you to crash.

 

At the end of the day, if your're using an older pc or laptop, you just may not be able to play super consistently without investing in a better setup. Good luck in the future.
