Bug with Bounce in pvp

I lost to an opponent two times to a bounce gyarados. I tried to use my vaporeon to counter the gyarados both times by using protect on the second turn of bounce but each time bounce bypassed the protect causing damage. Bounce should be affected by protect according to Bulbapedia. I also tried using wish during the bounce and that also failed. Protect/wish was used after taunt had ended in the first game and taunt was not used on vaporeon in the 2nd game, so no I was not under taunt. It seems that bounce is ignoring status moves for some reason. Sorry I have no video evidence.
