So before you fight Lt. Surge, in the very first room there is an NPC called Old Man Baily that you have to fight and beat to move on.

So I started the fight, but i wanted to look something up, so I tried to alt+tab out. Unfortunately I hit alt+tab+delete because my mind wanted me to press ctl+alt+delete.

This led to my computer closing out the Pokemon window. When I loaded it back up, I was back in Cerulean City for some reason.

So i trekked all the way back down to Vermillion again.

When I went to start the fight with Old man Baily again, all he said was to "Go ahead..." which is what he says if you beat him.

I did not in any way beat him but because I accidentally closed my window during the fight, the game effectively skipped the fight for me.

This is obviously not intended and seems like it could be used to skip other npc fights (but i have not experimented, so this may just be a client side fuck up).

Hello there, thank you for your report, and apologies for the delay of response!

However, it's normal: when you disconnect in battle, it will be counted as a loss, and you will be sent to your last visited PokéCenter as in a black out, though you won't lose 5% of your money.

Furthermore, the NPC will go in his 7 days cooldown, and won't be challengeable again during that time. You can then pass as if you won against him, but without the money and xp from it. The same goes if you lost legitimately, as well.

Note that this is only true for the non-essential NPCs to the story: Gym Leaders for example, can be rechallenged right away if you lost (though you won't get any more xp nor money from them in further battles against them; and once won, they will never be challengeable again), and need to be defeated for you to keep going on the story.

It can be used to avoid NPC battles indeed, and it actually is, by some.

There is no rule against it, it only affects your playthrough, not others', so it's up to you whether you want to use this trick to your advantage, or not :Sing:

I hope I could clear things up! I wish you a great day, and happy holidays!
