So I was trying to teach my metagross fire punch from the move tutor on route 42 and lo and behold he says it cant be taught. So I went to check Pokemon DB and wouldnt you know it Metagross can learn Fire Punch from tutors. So what gives? Is this an oversight on the developers side?

Hi there. It seems that you are looking at a wrong page there. As I see it, that is just a list of move tutors that are available on Route 212 and Survival Area in Pokemon Platinum. Since PRO is based on Gen. 6, you should be looking at this page instead and as you can see, there is nothing that indicates that Metagross can learn Fire Punch.
