I believe it might have to do something with the Zigzagoons having the "pick up" Ability since the items after Covet are normally given back but maybe the Zigzagoons with "Pick Up" Ability are keeping it. The move bestow from the zigzagoons could also influence the items wether they are given back or not. And maybe just the out of combat items are being affected. That would explain alot.

I have been encountering a problem today! So I wanted to train my meditite holding a macho brace (wanted to train SPD/ATK) Literally after killing a zigzagon, my item dissapeared from my pokes inventory. There was a line saying that the zigzagon was holding my macho brace now. I heard from people in all chat that wild pokemons aren't able to get your items lost so i killed it cuz the yellow icon showing the Macho Brace from my poke was still there. After the fight it dissapeared together with the icon and i was left with just my meditite. Sadly its hard to show evidence with screenshots/videos since the item is gone in one moment so its difficult to prove. You can clearly see that only two EV are trained, which indicates that i must have trained it and not cought. Im alright with all that but im wondering if there will be a refund anytime soon cuz i already saw quite some people encountering the same problem.
