The bug catching contest did not let me enter with my first pokemon in slot (Shiftry). When I clicked shiftry it said "An unexpected error occurred" and to contact the team. When I selected my second pokemon (Snorlax) it asked if i wanted to bring shiftry, then took all pokes i had in my party (Shiftry, Snorlax and Clefable) and brought them into the bug catching contest.
