Question about areas and trades

Hi,

i'm new to the game and i wanted to know smth :

Once i get the 4th badge in kanto, can i only buy pokemons from Kanto or pokemons from Johto, etc ?

And Can i use them in Kanto ? Or do i have to clear the other areas first ?

Until you beat 8 gyms in the region you're currently in the story of, you can not get mons from other regions. Once you have gotten 8 badges you can, but only regions you'd been to before, so since you're still in kanto you can still only get mons that spawned in kanto.
