Hi there. The merge was done in order to stabilize the servers and prevent crashes that were happening often. Red, Blue, and Yellow were the original pokemon games and therefore those were used for the names of the servers. When the merge happened, there was a vote that occurred for the new name of the new servers. Gold and Silver was the winner of this vote.
