I will send you a battle request and in the middle of the battle, you should disconnect/logout which will send you back to your last visited Pokémon Center. Put that Gyarados back into the PC since it won't let you enter Lake of Rage. After you've removed Gyarados from your team, go to Lake of Rage and this time the NPC should let you in.
