I was going through the Rock Tunnel when this happened to me twice. Basically, I was going in the path of a trainer. The trainer sees me and comes up to me, but, at the same time, a spawn occurs, which comes first (stopping the trainer battle). After that battle is dealt with, the trainer doesn't react anymore unless one walks one tile away from their eyepath and back, triggering it again.

 

This means one can walk away from a battle if a spawn would be to happen at the same time.

 

I wasn't sure if to post this to Battle Bugs or Spawn Bugs, as it concerns both, so I came here. Hope I could help a little.

Yeah, this has happened to me before. If you stay still for a second after the encounter the trainer will battle you. Or just walk back in their path.
