You can also get a Moonstone for free from the Nidoran(M) you get from a girl, trading with a Nidoran(F), North of Viridian City. Alternative is getting 4 badges and buying 1 for cheap if u can w8.

Just catch it and open his menu you will see if he is holding an item :Grin:

I've forget that each week (i think dunno ? seems to be 7 days for me) trainer reset, and items re-appears too, you can go back later in the same place you found the moonstone, it will be another one.
