How to check how many forms Gastly has? I can't find a description for the gastly I just caught and I don't know if it's rarer than other forms or not.

You see, every year the artists try to come up with new forms on Pokémon even if they already have one for this particular event.  A great way to check all the forms a Pokémon can have is directly in-game via the Pokédex. When you click the image icon of the Pokémon in the Pokédex, it'll show all the forms the Pokémon has. The only possible downside to that is simply that it doesn't mention which exact event that particular form is. Sometimes it can be obvious, like for example a Smeargle in a santa claus outfit will most likely be a Xmas form.

 

Another way you can check with more info will be via our wiki here . This will show all the forms for which event and year they were released.
