The abandoned Pokemon is random. Not related to your starter at all.

it really dosent matter about your starters , the abondonned pokemon is random,it can be : growlithe , bellsprout or horsea.

Oh okay I really just wanted a growlithe from the maze and my friend said that's how u get growlithe

Fear not, if you make it route 8 you can get a free growlithe.

 

The starter pokemon theory for the abandoned pokemon is not confirmed. It is likely anecdotal, which has turned into an 'old wives tale'.

Yeah my 2 Cents - Also started with Squirtle and I recieved a Horsea :)

I think we pretty much proved that the maze theory is Void right here :P
