Was trying to buy a Dratini in Kanto

so a player was advertising a dratini for sale and i wanted to buy since i had the money, once we meet up to trade tho it wouldnt let him trade the dratini to me because i hadnt completed all of kanto yet but i do have the 4 badges (currently 6 badges) required to trade

 

so does the dratini being traded have to be native to kanto for me to buy from another player, because i think the one they guy was trying to sell me was from johto so im guessing thats the reason?

 

can i only trade pokemon that are in the region im in? if so theres hope because i cant get a dratini from safari zone (not member) so my only option is buying it from a player

202219 Hi, yes the reason why you couldn't trade is because it was a Johto Pokémon and you're still in Kanto.

 

Once you're in Johto you can trade as soon as you get there with no badge requirements, likewise with Hoenn. Just so you know all of you're Kanto Pokémon will be locked in your PC when you arrive in Johto and you will only be able to trade Johto Pokemon. Likewise when you arrive in Hoenn, you will only be able to access Hoenn Pokemon and all of your Pokemon will be locked away until you get your 8th badge.

 

EDIT: Just going to add that once you unlock your PC you can also trade from that region again. ^^

Once you beat have 8 badge Johto, you will able to use and trade Pokemon Kanto and Johto.
