I'm just browsing some games me and my buddy can play and i was just wondering if this game had co-op of anything.

Can we co-op against the NPC or is there PVP in which there are double battles in this game?

There is no co-op in this game the way you describe it.

The only thing you could do (since it's an MMO) is to start together your adventures and tackle the story and all the gyms and Leagues at the same time.

Also, keep in mind that you can trade with him after getting 4 badges, so you could share each other's Pokemons if you meet any obstacles.
