With mega evolution the only time your Pokemon can mega evolve is in a battle then afterwards the evolution wears off (also only one mega evo available Pokemon can be mega evolved in a single match). I haven't been able to test it myself in-game so I don't know for sure, but if it doesn't have a prompt in battle then it probably hasn't been added fully to the game yet.

Mega evolution is planned to be unlocked after the game is released as it needs working on a bit. This is due to giving fair chances to new and old players. Item you have will be obtainable same way once the system is in place. SO yeah, it's not a waste.

As long as there are those that remember what was, there will always be those that are unable to accept what can be.
