Turns out a rollback happened yesterday and kept me in the elite 4 which was great.

Yeah, very most likely that.

I'm guessing you had the same thing as me: server crashed in the middle of battle against an E4, and when logging back in, turns out the rollback put the player right in front of the E4 member, ready to be battled again right away as the rollback means the server never recognized the previous battle.
