The Pvp coins you earn from battles are used to purchase items from the Pvp master npc. Regular coins are obtained via paypal and used to purchase items like the Pickaxe from the shop. Here's a useful guide on how to obtain the Coins you need to purchase the pick axe. I hope this helps and clears up your confusion.
