There aren't many tips that you need to play the game (unless you want to get into PvP), but I guess one thing I wish I had done when I started to play is to catch Pokemon for dex entries, as very important parts of the game (Love Island, Cerulean Cave and legendaries) require a certain amount of dex entries and evolution entries. It saves a lot of time running around the map in search of a specific Pokemon, and also when you do need to start filling in the evolution entries, you will have a lot of the pre-evolutions already in your PC, allowing you to go straight into training them and evolving!
