Before you go to Johto I can recommend that you buy some TM's from the gyms in Kanto. Maybe you wanna teach a gastly psychic, thunderbolt or w/e. And also remove leftovers from your pokemons so you have it in your inventory. Then you can use it on your starter in Johto. Good luck!
