how to catch wild pokemon for dummies

ok for this guide i will be explaining the 2 most popular methods maximize your chances at catching wild pokemon.

first off move explanation,

-false swipe

swipe will always leave a minimium 1 hp to the target. if you hit a 1hp pokemon with it, it will do no damage.

-substitute

sub creates a sub in front of your pokemon that will absorb damage, status, and most other things. it will take 1/4 of your health rounded down, and will have the same stats as you. when it takes damage equal or greater then it's hit points it will die. if you have a hp stat that has a remainder of .25, .5, or .75 after you divide it by 4 then you can make 4 substitutes assuming no healing moves/items/ability's. if you have a hp that can be divded by 4 evenly then you can only make 3 substitutes.

-endeavor

endeavor will make your targets hit points equal to yours, unless you have more hp then the target.

the trick

false swipe can be used to get your wild target to 1hp. because your targets hp affects the catch rate, a 1hp pokemon is easier to catch. status also increases your chance of catching the wild pokemon, however that chance vary's from generation to generation. i prefer paralyze, since it does no damage and does not wear off, but sleep is also acceptable. freeze is unreliable and dependent on random number generation. toxic/poison will kill the target eventually, which you do not want so they are out.

now what if the target is immune to normal moves?

you use substitute to get your pokemon to 1hp. if the wild pokemon can not break the sub, you can use sleep + switching out to remove the sub, and safely switch in the sub/endeavor pokemon while taking no damage. once you get to 1 hp (use ev training to get a hp that has .25 remainder when divided by 4. example 101 or 405) use endeavor. this will give the target 1hp. endeavour does NOT go through substitute, so if the target has sub you need to break it. further more their are a very small number of moves/pokemon that can attack through a sub.

at this point you status and proceed to catch normally.

because swipe has a low power, some people like to use att boosting moves on their swiper, or def dropping moves on the wild target.

good swipe users generally have a very high att base and are bulky enough to tank a lot of hits. i suggest:

-marrowak /w thick club

it has sword dance so it can boost up quickly, and thick club doubles its att stat

-scizor

also has SD and useful typing with a high att base

-escalveir

see scizor

-shedinja

immune to a large number of attacks, and also has sword dance

-fearow

stab swipe, and can learn fly/pay day(does this game have event moves?)

-parasect

synth insta heal + SD + swipe + spore is useful

-breloom

SD + spore + swipe is nice

any high level endeavour user works for sub + endeavour as long as it out speeds target.
