I can load the app and when I'm at the main menu I can attempt to login but when I click login, the text comes up underneath saying 'establishing connection' (if I remember correctly) and then 'logging in' but nothing happens, the text just fades and I'm left at the home screen.

This problem occurs if the server is full and the queues aswell, you'll have to try again and again. Just wait a few seconds/minutes after that you can press log in again. If nothing happens than keep waiting and rechecking by clicking on log in.
