[glow=yellow]Alex8lot's In-Depth Guide to the[/glow][glow=red]PRO[/glow][glow=yellow]IRC![/glow]

This is a guide on how to use the IRC for short-term and long-term users!

If you would like a much simpler guide on the IRC, check out daitana's PRO Chat (IRC) Basics Guide! They did a really nice job!

https://pokemonrevolution.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=121&t=26417

Short-Term Users

This section is for users that only plan on being on the IRC for a short time, like when the server is down or if you need help.

1. To connect to the PRO IRC, head to this link: https://kiwiirc.com/client/irc.atomicedge.org/pro,pro-support

2. Enter a PG nickname that you will choose to display as yourself on the IRC.

You can always change your nick with /nick new-nickname

3. Click "Start".

Upon entering the IRC, you should see a screen that looks similar to this:

XucthfQ.png

Make sure you read the topic! It will give you links to useful things that may solve your problem! Also, make sure you read the PRO IRC Ruleset. The link can be found conveniently in the topic.

To talk in the IRC, click into the text field into the bottom next to your nickname. Enter your question/comment, and simply press "Enter" on your keyboard. That's all there is to it! :)

Sometimes, you will want to PM, or private message someone. You can do this in two ways:

1. Type in /msg username message. With of course replacing "username" with your target's username, and "message" with the message you would like to send to that user. This will open up a dialog box at the top.

2. Type in /notice username message. The user will receive your message in normal chat, but nobody else can see it.

You can also click on a users name and click, "Message." This will open up a dialog box, like in the first example.

*Note: It is good IRC etiquette to ask someone if it is alright to PM them before doing it, because some IRC clients can make quite annoying noises when the user is PM'ed. This is just recommended (by me and a few other people), not necessary.

When in the IRC, if you have a question you need to ask, or an issue you need to report, it is best if you be as specific as possible. If someone, like a user or IRC staff, is trying to assist you, you will make their task helping you much easier.

Example:

How NOT to ask/tell about something: I can't login because of bug

How TO ask/tell about something: The login screen says, "Can not connect to server." What does this

mean?

Remember, the PRO IRC is a help chat, not just random conversation chat. Nobody will mind if you just talk a little bit, but full-blown conversations that flood out other users questions are best left for PMs.

Long-Term Users

This section is for users who plan on being very active in the IRC, not just for when the servers go down.

It's best if you read the Short-Term Users section first.

1. To connect to the PRO IRC, head to this link: https://kiwiirc.com/client/irc.atomicedge.org/pro,pro-support

2. Enter a PG nickname that you will choose to display as yourself on the IRC.

3. Click "Start".

It is best to download a client rather than use the web client if you plan on being a long-term user, because the web client can sometimes be unreliable, and not have as many features as other ones. The client I personally use is HexChat, but you can find many more with a simple Google search. The address for the Network is irc.atomicedge.org and the port is 6667. (For SSL connections use 6697) To get to the #pro and #pro-support channels, do /join (channelname).

The first thing you will want to do will be to register your nickname. This is not necessary, but highly recommended. Here are some reasons that you should do this:

1. It prevents people from using your nick while on the IRC

2. It allows you to talk during moderated-mutes.

3. You can do many things with NickServ with your registered nickname.

4. You have to have a registered nickname to become voiced or higher if you ever want to become voiced on the IRC.

*For more about becoming voiced, read Becoming Voiced later on in this guide

You can register your current nickname by typing this in: /ns register password email . You should replace "password" with the password you chose to use and "email" with your email address. Once you've done that, every time you enter the IRC and use that registered nickname, you will have to identify yourself by doing /ns identify password . Then, you will have all (if any) channel privileges, and be able to talk in a moderated-mute.

Wherever the list of users online are in your client, you might be noticing either symbols or colors next to certain people's names. Let me just tell you that in my opinion, it is a lot easier to identify who is what with symbols rather than colors. If you are using HexChat, you will start out with colors. To change this to symbols, navigate to Settings -> Preferences -> User List and uncheck the box that says, "Show icons for user modes."

The symbols tell what position in IRC staff a certain user is. Here is a table showing what each symbol means:

*Note: Gardevoir is a bot. Don't try to communicate with it, or you will end up looking silly :P

Here are all the modes in the IRC that you may see set at some point.

  • +m - mute (only voice and up can speak)
  • +M - moderated (only people with registered nicks can speak)

Next up are some basic commands that you may want to use with your stay on the IRC, but aren't necessary.

  • /whois nickname - will display basic information about the user
  • /whowas nickname - has the same effect as /whois, but shows information for someone who just left
  • /me text - Used to show an action in text. Example: "/me ate food" will display as " *Alex8lot ate food ".
  • /away reason - Will set you as away. Whenever someone tries to message you, they will get a message saying that you are away, and your reason for being away.
  • /back - Will undo the /away
  • /help - lists all raw commands
  • !seen nickname - Will tell you when a user was last seen
  • /list - sends a list of different IRC channels that are on the network (The network being AtomicEdge)
  • /join channel - will join specified channel

Here, we have some NickServ commands you may want to use.

  • /ns drop username - Completely de-registers a registered nick.
  • /ns info username - Same effect as the !seen command, but only works for registered users.
  • /ns set kill on-or-off - Sets the kill status of your nick. The kill status is whether a registered nick that has not been identified will be changed to a Guest or not.
  • /ns ajoin add channel - When a nick is identified, it will automatically joined the specified channels
  • /ns set password newpassword - Will change the password of your registered nick.
  • /ns ghost nickname password - Will give you back access to your nick when it is a ghost. This occurs when the server believes you are still connected when you are not. This usually happens with disconnects.

GROUPING NICKNAMES

----------------------------

What grouping nicknames is is basically taking more than one nickname and putting it in a group with your main nick, and makes it so that the grouped nicknames all share the same privileges. This is useful if you commonly use an alt in the IRC.

To begin, switch to the nickname you would like to add to your main-nick's group. This nick that you are switching to has to be unregistered. You can drop the registration if you need to. Next, enter the command /ns group main-nick password , with password being the password of your main-nick. Then, you should be good. You can always do /ns glist to see the list of added nicks in your group. To remove a nick from the group, simply drop it. That's all there is to it! :)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here, we have some ChanServ commands you may want to use.

  • /cs info channel - Will give information about the specified channel

Here, we have some MemoServ commands you may want to use.

  • /ms send username message - Sends a memo to specified user. A memo is like a PM, but an offline user can read it once they get online.
  • /ms read new - Will read all of your new memos.
  • /ms list - Lists all memos you have recieved.
  • /ms read number - Will show the contents of a specified memo number from the list.

Becoming Voiced

----------------------

So you may have seen people that have voice (plus sign next to name) on the IRC, and wondering, "Gee, how do I get that?" Well, voice isn't something you can just give yourself. You are given voice by an IRC staff for being responsible, respectful, and helpful. Becoming voiced gives you the responsibility of moderating the IRC chat. The IRC staff is always looking for more people to add to their ranks.
