Early EV training

now, I know a lot of you are going to question the legitimacy of this guide, because most of you think it is a dumb idea to EV train before you have the syncro ability.

On the other hand, the game actually has a small side quest you can do for an oddish where you have to catch a pidgey with at least 15 IV in attack and speed. I completed this quest before I beat Brock. in honesty, I beat it before I reached pewter  so here we go.

EV training is Effort value training. Effort value is the extra stat value you get for defeating a Pokemon.

All of the Pokemon we will be talking about in this guide can be found and defeated before you face Brock, without membership. On the other hand, this guide is special in my opinion since most guides do not go over everything before you reach Pewter. They basically say you cannot EV train before you have a couple badges and more routes with accessibility. This is incorrect. I guess I will start from the pallet area.

Starting in pallet, I never found any Pokemon in the 4 accessible spots of grass, so thats out. stick to route one when you start (my opinion).

On Route 1 there are 6 non exclusive Pokemon you can catch.

The first is #162: Furret. It is the evolution of sentret, which can also be found on route 1. Furret is only found in the morning/day. It yields 2 speed EV points. Be wary of the fact that it can have the ability Keen Eye, which means there is a chance you cannot lower its accuracy.

Sentret, as I mentioned can be found on Route 1 in the morning/day. it is a nice Pokemon for early EV training as it gives 1 EV of what seems to be the most commonly wanted stat, Attack.

Pidgey can also be found on route 1, during the morning/day. If you chose Pikachu, I would recommend catching one, but not spending too much time on them. just long enough to raise your level a couple times so you can continue easily. This is because it yields a speed point, and you will have a lot of speed in the first place usually if you are using Pikachu.

Rattata is in the same place as pidgey, still on route one and still only one speed IV yield. It can be found during the morning/day/night. So for pikachu, you are better off fighting pidgeys, for some other starters (I guess? I dont believe there are any type weaknesses at this point) I guess fight either.

Spinarak can be found on route 1, but only at night or in the morning. it yields one attack, as sentret did.

lastly for route one, we have hoothoot, who yields 1 health, but only spawns at night.

Now, the next place you will want to go is route 2.

route 2 contains the following previously mentioned pokemon:

Pidgey

Hoothoot

Spinarak

Route 2 contains the following unmentioned pokemon:

Snubbull: only found at night, yields: 1 attack

Weedle: found at any time of day, yields: 1 speed

Metapod and Kakuna: any time of day other than night, yield: 2 Defense

Caterpie: found in the morning, yield: 1 health

Butterfree: found in the morning, yield: 2 special ATK, 1 special defense

Beedrill: found in the morning, yield: 2 attack, 1 special defense

next place you can go will be route 22, and that will be a step back, to the left of viridian city. this is where the path to the pokemon league is believe it or not!

previously mentioned pokemon:

Hoothoot

rattata

New pokemon:

Doduo: Morning/day, yield: 1 attack

Mankey: any time, yield, 1 attack

Nidoran(m/f): Morning/day, yield:(1 attack/ 1 health)

poliwag: night, yield:1 speed

ponyta: day, yield: 1 speed

spearow: morning/day, yield: 1 speed

next area to go to if you haven't yet is viridian forest. this is the last area for me to cover.

previous Pokemon:

Beedrill

Butterfree

Caterpie

hoothoot

kakuna

metapod

Spinarak

Weedle

new Pokemon:

Pikachu: any time, yield:2 speed

Budew:Morning/day, yield: 1 special attack

A couple last words: Pokemon may spawn at different times of day depending on where they are, but I just included the first sightings as my order. Also, you apparently can only put 254 EVs into 2 stats as full use of your EV points, but most recommend putting 252 into 2 stats and using the other 4 for another stat. thanks for reading, have fun playing! :D

Gyms beaten with one pokemon:

Brock --- beaten by budew

Misty --- beaten by same budew as above

Lt. Surge --- by roselia, evolution of budew above. (had to use pidgey in this to take the first dig hits, roselia dealt all damage.)

it doesn't matter if that is what berries are for. EV stats help not only in PVP, but also in game. For example, the same budew has defeated 3 gyms. this is because I EVed it... I don't think I did much, but I worked on it

thank you everyone for over 400 views :D it means a lot as it is my first guide. The fact that it is still pretty close to the top on the guides list is either amazing(because of views) or maybe it is because I made it. either way, once again, thank you :D

And then people told me i was crazy for EV training alot of Speed, Attack and SpAtk while i was on my way thru Hoenn a few weeks ago.

Yet i was able to finish all 8 Hoenn Gyms using 4 Pokémon for battle, besides using Masquerain and Zigzagoon for Cut and Flash.

Good guide, should help beginners out alot!
