When I hover my mouse over a Pokemon's HP during battle an empty box pops up, and I'm not sure why.

Is there a rendering problem on my end, or is it a bug?

I've tested it on Windows and Mac. The problem exists on both.

This box displays entry hazards, such as Spikes, Toxic Spikes, Stealth Rock and Sticky Web.

Look at the box again when these are active.

The box is useful in Pvp and boss battles. Once you start fighting you will eventually rely on these boxes. Well, at least I do.

the big rock is the Stealth Rock move
the grey things are the Spikes move
the purple looking spikes are the Toxic Spikes move
