Yes, once you've beaten all the Grinches the police lock the cave and you cannot re-enter. You need to go to whoville mayor and santa to collect your rewards and you will have finished the story part of the Christmas area.

 

Also while you cannot re-enter the cave there are still other things to do on the event area like hunt for xmas pokemon and battle the boss.
