Yes, i found Johto far more difficult than Kanto, difficult increase when you reach 4th gym , even with lvl 40 evolved poke i couldn't pass him (had to borrow pokemons) You still have the choice to borrow pokemons, less fun, or at least use them only when you really can't pass some path (like i did)

I think it's 120 kanto poke, 38 evolved poke (same as Love Island) beat Red, and go to subway from Goldenrod. But there is already many guides/post about how go to Trainer Valley.

You can find a free moonstone in Mt.Moon, i think it's near a ladder ? I dont remember well.
