The Happiness stat is a number which represents how happy your Pokémon is. The lowest possible stat is zero, while the highest possible stat is 255.

When you catch a Pokémon, its happiness will automatically have a value of 70.

While happiness usually doesn't particularly change any combat stats of your Pokémon, it's important to keep their happiness high if you wish to use moves out of combat, such as Headbutt, Dig or Rock Smash, or if you wish to evolve a Pokémon that requires happiness.

In combat unique moves named 'Return' and 'Frustration' exist, they do not change the combat stats of your Pokémon but the power of the moves themselves scale with the happiness of a Pokémon.

Headbutt: 150 or more.

Dig: 150 or more.

Rock Smash: 220 or more at Love Island, otherwise, no happiness is required.

Happiness Evolutions: 255(!)

Quote

(!)Happiness evolutions are special ...

...but not complicated.

The Pokémon has to reach the max amount of happiness (255) while meeting the other requirements in order to evolve,
it does not necessarily require a level up. If your Pokemon already reched max Happiness, you need to lower the Happiness first by letting your Pokémon faint in a wild battle for example, and then rech the max Happiness again.

To check a Pokémon's happiness, you can use the command /happy 1 in the in-game chat. You can use a number from 1 to 6, depending on the partyslot you want to investigate.

Combat moves

Return: Power = ⌊Happiness ÷ 2.5⌋
Frustration: Power = ⌊(255 - Happiness) ÷ 2.5⌋

The moves Return and Frustration are Happiness based - depending on the Happiness of a Pokémon, the power of the move changes. While Return gets stronger the happier your Pokémon is, Frustration gets stronger the unhappier your Pokémon is.

Using above formulars concludes:
- The max Power for both is 102

- If the result is a integer number (2.9, 1.02) the result is rounded down to an non integer (2, 1)

- If the user's Happiness is 128 or more, Return is stronger than Frustration.

- If the user's Happiness is 127 or less, Frustration is stronger than Return.

Exception: The minimum Base Power is 1

A preliminary conclusion for gaining Happiness:
The best way to gain Happiness is to equip a Soothe Bell to your Pokémon and level it up. A level up increases the Happiness with the use of a Soothe Bell by 10 points.

A other fast, but perhaps a more costly, way would be buying services to increase happiness.  Chris in Slateport Cities open air marked or in Goldenrod Cities underground offers snacks and drinks. Brad in the same locations offers a grooming service (with cooldown). More information in the method section below.

When trying to raise the happiness stat of a Pokémon, a soothebell.pngSoothe Bell will be of particular use to you, as it doubly increases the happiness-points payout for the most usual happiness gaining actions. This is considered in this post.
Example:
1(2)
The 1 in this example refers to the number without Soothe Bell while the pink number in braces refer to the number with Soothe Bell equiped

You can obtain asoothebell.pngSoothe Bell from the following:

Costlessly claimable one-off in National Park (available)

Held by some wild Pokémon*
*(Pokémon Spawns do change frequently in PRO, if you want to know which Pokémon currently may held a Soothe Bell, check out our Spawns Dump or use our Discord bot in our Official PRO Discord)

Methods affected by soothebell.pngSoothe Bell:

Walking. When you walk your Pokémon at the first spot—and only the first spot of your team order—your Pokémon will gain 1(2) happiness points each 216 steps. (This doesn't apply to land mounts, but does to water mounts).

Winning fights. When you win a fight against a Pokémon, regardless of battle type, all participated Pokémon in your team will gain 1(2) happiness. (Only works for Pokémon still alive at the end of battle).

Level ups. When your Pokémon get´s a level up, no matter how, it will gain 5(10) happiness.

Methods not affected bysoothebell.pngSoothe Bell:

protein.png iron.pngcalcium.pngzinc.pngcarbos.pnghpup.png
Vitamins. Protein, Iron, Calcium Zinc, Carbos, and HP ups will boost the happiness by 2 points.

PP ups PP Max and Rare Candy will boost the happiness stat by 0, but you will get the level up happiness boost from using a Rare Candy.

EV Reducing berries. EV Berries will boost your happiness stat by 2 as long as you have 1 or more EVs in the according EV Stat.

Trading. When you trade a Pokémon it´s happiness will be reset to 70, therefore, it is only possible to gain happiness with this method when the traded Pokémon happiness is under 70.

I tested on digging like 2 months ago

I could teleport through a cave by using dig with 150 happiness

Did the requirement change?

Thank you for the information, I tested it and yes, you are right, Dig only needs 150 or more happiness, the same for Headbutt which I also tested.

I edited the guide and I have to apologize to gave away wrong information.

Thank you very much to clarify that! :)
