The same applies if the opposing Pokémon's Ability is Pickpocket, or if the items were swapped and then either the Pokémon was defeated or you fled the battle. I understand your frustration, but it's the players responsibility to take care of their items and pay attention during battles. Battles against NPCs work differently, and item interactions are handled differently than in wild battles. I hope this information was helpful and answered your questions. Outside the cave, there should be an NPC blocking the entrance. Talk to him, and once he disappears, Damon will appear at the campfire. After speaking with Damon, you can make your way to Crater Town. Please read carefully, Damon must say: "[...] Find me in Crater Town. [...]" There's also a Sailor who can take you from Slateport to Crater Town (east of Charlene and Jonathan). Once you arrive in Crater Town, you must complete a quest to access the dungeon.
