i'd suggest buying the energy roots in Goldenrod Basement after doing the subdue to guard sidequest.

heal 200HP like hyper potions and are half the price of hyper potions :)

 

also he sells revival herbs which heal 100% instead of 50% which might be usefull in sticky situations (cost more though but i'd suggest bringing atleast 5 of those just incase)

It was a miracle how I beat it. Salamence using Fly versing the Fighting type definitely helped me more in that battle.

edit: You can find it by catching muk and grimers , usually they hold the item , like 5-10% chance to get it.

If he doesn't reply, assume he used Kingdra, ability doesn't really matter.. most likely sniper.. running dragon dance/waterfall/outrage/rest.

DD boosts waterfall/outrage. Rest heals, and Kingdra probably has lum equipped every time.

 

Krookodile running moxie ability. Crunch, Earthquake, Stone Edge/Rock Tomb/, Outrage.

Actually I was using Dragon Pulse, Ice beam and surf with Kingdra and Crunch and Earthquake with Krookodile.
