I like Carel's environment background. It does look a little cartoony, but like she said, it needs to be refined a little bit, and then it'll be awesome. :)

 

The smaller sprites are more realistic and look cleaner. Resolution > size any day.

The SS shown is of pokestar studios, whete the sprites are enlarged anyway

The reason 1 sprite is smaller than the other is due to perspective. Something is smaller the further away it is.
