Welcome! Evolving until later is generally a good idea as it'll take less exp overall to reach the next level as a pre-evolution Pokemon. However, I'd just recommend evolving whenever during story. :heart:

I've only been playing a month or so and I've come to the conclusion that any of the guys that I happen to catch with the right ability and solid stats I will wait to evolve. Anything else I'm just using to progress through the story I evolve when I feel I'm starting to hit a wall and have trouble with gyms.

 

I do suggest catching yourself a good gastly and holding off on evolving him until late 90s. He is very useful for the elite 4 in both hoenn and johto and being able to easily max his level will be very beneficial

Yes, evolved pokemon took much more experience to level up and grinding will be longer. But, for some pokemon like Happiny, Chansey and Blissey, where in their evolution line, all of them need the same amount of exp to level up. So, it doesn't matter if you evolve them early or not. In the end, It's up to you really. If you don't mind grinding, just evolved it earlier. Have a good day!
