I caught the mankey on route 10. I'm yet to beat Ash in Viridian Forest.

Hi! I just caught a Mankey and it had a "unknown hat" in it's inventory slot. I got very excited and immdieatly removed it from the slot, but there is nothing to be found in my inventory. Am I supposed to lose my item like this, or what happened here?
