you can actualy get the story done with any pokemon you want, you can look for a close route where you can level your team , so its get a bit easier. And when you are done with story can focus on catching a good pok for seeling or using it. I recomend you to evolve the haunter so you can use poison types, and a pidgeot or arcanine would be great to story too
