As someone who has played Pokemon games for about 15 years now, I think the IV system has bothered me more than anything. I certainly like the idea of each Pokemon being special. However, IVs cause certain problems for me. As it stands right now if you want to get a competitive Pokemon. You have to spend hours of catching the same Pokemon until it has good ivs. Not to mention your starter is most likely going to be useless in competitive play. Maybe it just me, but that doesn't seem that like that is what Pokemon is suppose to be about. I understand that it makes the game more challenging and that's great. I like a challenging game. Personally I think a much better system would be to allow players to do some special kind of training that allows their Pokemon to get better ivs. Maybe its just allowing them to get experience past lvl 100 and that exp goes to making their ivs better. Ideally the amount of time spent on the special training would be equivalent to the amount of time it would take to get good iv Pokemon. But instead of catching the same Pokemon over and over again and it feeling less and less like Pokemon, you could be training really hard with the same Pokemon and in develop a special bond with it that would allow you to overcome its lack of natural ability (ivs).

 

With a system like this it would allow the game to stay challenging, without breaking immersion by having 200 of the same Pokemon sitting in your box.

Sorry to burst ur bubble, but this is always how pokemon has worked, right from gen 1. It forms the basis of the whole game. You cant just change something as fundamental as IVs in pokemon. It would mess up the whole balance of a game thats based on getting the best pokemon. Usually that means finding bad ones along the way.

 

I think also the 'special training' you refer to is called EV (effort value) training. But with that comes the fact that everyone can do it, so you will still be outclassed by someone with the same pokemon, but better IVs.

 

Bottom line is we wont change a core aspect of pokemon

I understand that its been in the games since the start. I wasn't referring to EV training, because like you said you still get outclassed by Pokemon with better ivs. I'm not saying do away with the IV system. Merely have the ability to modify them through hours of training. To me hours of hard training feels like more like Pokemon, than going out in the wild catching 300 useless pidgeys to finally get to one good one. Maybe i just cling to tightly to the anime and my own perception of how Pokemon should be.

Simply battle grinding for better IVs is a rather awful way of going about it. That alone would skew the economy since good IV Pokemon would be more accessible to everybody. That same concept applies to breeding.

 

IV manipulation was more easily done in HeartGold/SoulSilver onwards where you could simply have one of the parents hold an EV-enhancing item. So, for example, the Power Bracer enhances the progression of the Attack stat. If a parent held the Power Bracer, the Attack IV would be passed to the offspring. This method of IV manipulation remained unchanged until the 6th generation, in which Destiny Knot received a sort of rework making IV breeding much easier.

 

A system like this should be employed in PRO. But there are problems with doing so. Firstly breeding, EV items, and DK aren't in the game of course. Secondly, this would hurt the economy. Perhaps this is what OP was trying to get at.

I don't know that battle grinding is for sure the answer either. There just has to be a way to avoid breeding/catching 100s of the same Pokemon before getting a good one. (Without making high iv Pokemon any less time consuming/hard to get)

i like the system here with Ivs, at least you see exactly how much IV they have (not like in pokemmo,where you ahve range of iv and at end its just a bad iv pokemon)

ad its a MMO afterall. whats the point to get best pokemon fast(if you super lucky i guess) and then have nothing to do.you get bored and leave...

I think your missing the point. I have stated multiple times that the structure of the IV system would not have to change. Just allow players to modify the IVs of the Pokemon and just make it take a really long time. So it still takes a long time to get the best Pokemon in the game. Again I still want it to be just as hard for people to get good IV Pokemon.

That is the whole point, not to get things easy. You are also able to capture every starter Pokemon in wild based on the region where you are currently. That being said, our rates are a lot different when you compare them with other games, more user friendly. Time is not only variable that increases the chances of a better Pokemon.

EVs maybe. IVs not. You can't change the IVs of a Pokemon you already caught in any way and it makes no sense. Chances of getting better stated Pokemon before you even captured it? Most likely, and we already have it covered.

Special training are meant to be EV based only. In the Pokemon world, not every Pokemon is same strong, that is normal and it is working as intended.

The game will be challenging regardless. Such system you are presenting is rather common suggestion. However, it causes conflict with other things, such as hunting and having unique Pokemon you get through good effort.


As long as there are those that remember what was, there will always be those that are unable to accept what can be.
