Thanks for the pointer on the coins. I'll delve into the wiki when I need some info. The game guides section is great.

 

Is there a map or anything that shows all spawns and locations? that was something I still have yet to figure out.

There is a map in the top right-hand corner.

For the Pokemon that spawn on each route/area, you can look in your Pokedex or you can click the tab in the top left corner which will advise you what Pokemon are available in the current area.
