Okay so for starting off with, the nature you want to choose depends on which pokemon you are building and the same goes for the ability. For the nature: Let's say you are building a machop. First thing you want to do is check its base stats in pokedex. When you look at machamp you see it has a solid 130 on "ATK" (seen from pokedex) stat implying this will be a physical attacker. So you would want to choose either a nature that raises atk or speed. However if you look at machamps speed you see it has a 55base speed, which is very low compared to most pokemon. Also you notice it's "spatk" base stat is at 65 so you cannot run it a special attack machamp due to the low stat, or you could try but wouldn't be high enough damage. Speed in general is good to leave neutral for good physical attackers who don't have much base speed to begin with since you will still find some outspeeds in pvp such as defense walls or spdef walls (Immensly bulky pokemon that are usually slow but tank a lot). So what you should be thinking, since it's atk stat is so high, I'm gonna run my machamp adamant nature with 4 physical moves. (Adamant nature Increases you atk stat by a bit and decreases you spatk stat by a bit also). Since you are running 4 physical moves on your machamp, you have no reason to invest anything into spatk so the trade off -spatk for +atk is worth it!. Also when you build a pokemon, you want to look at it's movepool (which moves it can learn). Since machamp learns mostly physical moves and some being very powerful, this fits with the way you wanted to start building it (being adamant). For the ability: About abilities, each pokemon gets 3 different ability choices or less (hydreigon only gets 1 for example). Look at each ability and see which one could go well with your movepool and/or stats. Example: Machamp gets access to the ability NoGuard which guarantees his moves to hit the target. You also noticed when building your machamp that machamp learns a move called dynamic punch which has 100% confusion rate and does damage the the foe if it hits! This may seem completetly OP however the drawback of this move is it has low accuracy which may cause your pokemon to miss landing the move a couple of turns. Comboing NoGuard with dynamic punch will guarantee you land the hit and confuse the target each time you attack since you can't miss thanks to NoGuard ability. Follow these steps when building your pokemon to come up with some good strategies :P Basicaly look at: Base stats/Movepool/Combos with ability. Many people have already found good ways of building pokemon so if you need any examples just follow what this links advises you to build https://www.smogon.com/dex/xy/formats/ou/ If you eventually have enough knowledge you can start building your own pokemon but I'd suggest looking at pre-built pokemon/strategies first.
