PvP Anonymity

Recommended Posts

Hi.

I don't do PvP all that much and one of the reasons is, anonymity. I feel there should be a choice if I want to reveal my identity or leave it as anonymous. I have a YouTube phobia. What if my loss not only embarrasses me but gives a YouTuber 400K views. Okay I was exaggerating there but, in all seriousness. I just want to suggest some type of way to stay anonymous for a PvP match. Thankyou for reading and taking the time.

You could always ask your opponent not to post it should they have a youtube channel, but in the end i think the simplest way to prevent this is just to win, that way you won't be able to have an embarrassing loss by yourself on youtube

I like this idea because it can prevent players from taunting each other (what is an issue PRO struggles to deal with since most part of the time there are no moderators online...), it can also permit to limit opponent teams leaks (what I feel is good for pvp).

I kinda understand where you're coming from, I lost a few games to someone from Empire the other day and first think thought after was "hahahaha fuck that's me getting exposed on YouTube" but tbh as someone that created content in the past, I don't think it's that deep. Not once did I post a video with the intent to put my opponent down or embarrass them, it's just for entertainment.

The only advantage I can see from this would be that some guilds log team info and so showing your username means some people might get the advantage of knowing your sets. This removes that but I'm not sure it's that big of an issue that it needs changing. Also personal it fuels me to play better when I'm against someone who's name I know from a "rival" guild and that competitiveness would deteriorate massively if each match I was against "opponent trainer".

The truth is that a defeat should never be embarrassing in any way but youtubers like to « expose » others by acting like they were some kind of talented invincible pvp player, what is clearly not the case...

For ranked ladder, I feel there is a need to reveal identiy, otherwise people can abuse "anonimity" by throwing hate speeches more often for example, which regularly shown on Showdown for people with throwaway account. Furthermore, I'd say it makes the ladder lackluster if you just meet people with same name "Anonymous Trainer" if such feature is implemented.

Imo, this feature is more suited for unranked ladder, but rarely anyone plays there nowadays so there is that.

The closest in-house solution atm would be for you to create an alt account, ladder with it and not tell anyone who you are, if you are really concerned about being exposed on the Internet or something similar to that.

I don't think it should be a required thing, but the ultimate solution is to make it an option. So that everyone who wants their name on, can, and everyone who doesn't, can have the option not to.

I really don't see the negative in making anonymity an option at all.

Maybe if a code was placed at the end of the tag. (Ex: Anonymous Trainer#99237) Each tag is assigned to a player, so if their toxic and pm you while in a PVP match, and they have the anonymous mode on, it would show that tag, so you can still report and stuff. Just an idea that covers all viable points, but could probably be done better.

I also think rivalry, and making the ladder more interesting isn't a really viable point IMO.

I think it can be a really good thing for the game for many reasons :

1) If you share your games on Youtube.

-> Actually, people can check your move set / items / ivs very easily. This is a really big and unfair advantage. With this system, they can be hidden if they want / need.

2) There will be less flame / taunt / insults in the battle chat with this system. You can't send an annoying PM if you don't know your opponent

3) The pvp battle will be fairer. It will be harder / impossible to share important information like move set with your friends / guild. With this system , each player will have same information : NONE. We need to check / think during the game and we shouldn't have an advantage knowing that this Volcarona is HP Ice (for example) BEFORE the game.

I hope it will be implemented in the future :PikaLurk:

Thanks

Another thing i realized for this however. Breaking the rules will be so much easier.

That's just it, you won't have your name shown which means your opponent won't know who you are, and therefore won't be able to report you. You won't be able to tell them anything in battle chat in terms of stop time stalling, or something they aren't allowed to do in game, because you won't know who it is. And if the pvp glitches as to where you can't battle anymore, who can you pm to ask which of you will dc.

The simple answer is you can't. You can't report anyone because you don't know who they are, and you can't talk to them about it in battle chat whatsoever. After thinking about this i think i'm putting my vote as a -1

+1 to the idea that this could be a toggle so that you could keep your name hidden so that you don't get dm'd by the opponent or taunted without having to resort to the /ignore button. I would love to be anonymous while I try out weird PvP teams.

(I decided to edit out this part because maybe it sounded too rude.)

My only issue is what G3n mentioned above. What do we do if the opponent is exploiting a bug, using something not allowed, the game crashes and we can't communicate with our opponent? Do we stay stuck against an enemy who we can't talk to and reach an agreement? Or do we log out and take the loss without being able to talk it out?
