From friends I have spoken to of which are always top of rankings. There are just not enough new content towards PvP, they do not really care for the cosmetics etc either. These players need huge meta shake ups where there is lots more Pokemon that are viable and definitely need the new gens. So I’d say for the most part people will get their rank and play a little bit extra but there is just not a lot to keep them playing all season long. Because if they don’t care for the cosmetics which are rng based anyways and they already have epic/godly legendaries there is not much left for them to do.
