Hello guys, this is my first guide and its something pretty simple, but i'd like to share it with you since it might save some of your time in a quest for an epic Moxie Gyarados for pvp or even for the Heatran quest.

As we know, magikarp is a common pokemon to get but getting that one we are looking for, sometimes is boring and takes too much time.

Things needed for optimal hunt:

- Black Medallion (highly recomended)

- Sync poke (Jolly or Adamant)

- Low to medium level Rattata with Sucker Punch move (easy and fast pokemon to get)

- Smoke ball item for rattata (usually dropped by wild grimers, koffings and weezings and helps you to flee from unwanted wild encounters)

- Acess to Trainers Valley (not 100% need because you can do what the guide says in any encounter, but highly recomended for maximum efficiency)

- Some pokeballs, leppa berries and sitrus berries or potions

First thing you want to do is to get your sync fainted in front of the party, followed by Rattata. This is necessary because even if the sync is fainted, its still possible to sync if hes in front and saves you time to switch to another poke.

Then go to Trainers Valley (again, not 100% needed but its the best place for hunting), once you go there, go inside the Pitch Black Cave. Theres a lake inside as you get in and thats gonna be your hunting ground.

Why here? Well, first off, surfing the water only spawns Magikarps and sometimes Zubats, and since theres no repel trick for Magikarp, this is imo the best place to do it. Also, the magikarps spawning there are around ~50 level which is nice and also saves some time grinding it.

Before hunting give the smoke ball to rattata, as its easier to avoid some pesky zubats that sometimes wont let you go. And then start hunting! Always use Sucker Punch, and if the magikarp you're facing has rattle ability (the one you need for a Moxie Gyarados), it will show a message like this:

And now, its just a matter of time until you get what you want. keep in mind magikarps hit you a bit, so from time to time you have to heal the rattata with a potion or sitrus berry, also some leppas for the move pp, but those are items we usually have in bulk so thats not a big deal.

Anyway, thats it for today, hope this short guide helps you to get a gyarados you want without spending much time hunting for one!

A small but interesting guide.

Great work on this, I'm sure many will enjoy it!

As for a small addition to this, because I just can't help myself to it -

In addition to hunting for it in the Pitch Black Cave, you can also hunt for it using the Old Rod in Mt. Silver 1F.

Which yields a high level Pokemon between 47-50, but it is a tier 2 spawn. The unique thing about this spot is that no other Pokemon is fishable with the Old Rod.

Making that place also a interesting choice to farm. As Poliwag would only be fishable with a Good Rod, thereafter leaving the only fishable with Old Rod, a Magikarp.

The only requirement to access Mt.Silver is that the player has defeated Johto Elite Four.
I am sure that 90% who will view this, already has Mt.Silver unlocked, which is why I decided to put it in there.

Thank you very much for your input @Electrocute4u it is indeed even a better place to hunt! I totally forgot about the old rod since its one i barely use but as you describe it, its even a better and cheaper hunting ground with this method.

Much love and thanks!

I'm pretty sure Sootpolis is the best spot and just use a trace synch.

While that is true, the Pokemon level is only 30-34 and the player would have to have completed parts of the of Hoenn Story (and obtained HM06 Dive) in order to unlock it.

But it is also a prime spot for surfing/fishing a Magikarp or Gyarados, as they are the only spawns in that map.

My bad, I didn't see the "as fast as possible" at the end of the title.

Well, I don't think this guide has anything to do with the regions and or how fast to get one from the get-go.

But rather the speed of getting a H.A and the best spot to hunt it in overall.

This is why I decided to mention Mt.Silver 1F:

- Cheap and no expenses to get to it from the starter region (Kanto)

- Highest spawn levels possible

- Accessible early on, for any newcomers

- Maximum a tier 2 spawn, as they appear mostly at the same "rates" as a tier 1.

- No extra use of HM or TM to access the spot (i.e No Cut, Waterfall, or Rock smash to access a water spot)

- Only allows 1 Pokemon to spawn

- Can be fished with a low-tier Rod (i.e Old Rod), and be the only catchable Pokemon with it.

- Pokecenter outside the cave, less then 30 steps away from the spawn location, for easy access to healing.

While the spot you mentioned is excellent as well
It is only accessible for the people that have completed Johto and Hoenn, or part of Hoenn and gotten themselves HM06 Dive.

Furthermore, it is a long way too treverse by foot, if you want to spend as little as possible to farm for it.

And it does lack some of the ones I have listed for the spot I chose.

Hi! I'd like to give it a bit of feedback after I've read it. Glad to see new guide makers 🙂

There are technically better and earlier places than provided above, with quicker methods. However, I'll go step by step commenting on it. This is purely my opinion, I think the guide completely works as it is.

- Black Medallion (highly recomended)

^In my opinion this should just be obligatory, as hunting a pokemon's HA without Black Medallion is painful beyond belief.

- Low to medium level Rattata with Sucker Punch move (easy and fast pokemon to get)

You can also use Pursuit or other Dark Type moves it learns such as Bite (level 10, Pursuit at 13). I'd still recommend using a Trace pokemon in the second slot equipped with a Smoke Ball as it instantly shows the ability and we can flee if it is not what we are looking for. In the first slot we can have a Fainted Synch (equip a Toxic Orb and spam Flash or any non-damaging move until it faints quickly).

^reediting this: I'm aware getting a Trace Ralts can be a butt pain in the early game, still feasible to find in Love Island if you complete its requirements before Johto though.

- Smoke ball item for rattata (usually dropped by wild grimers, koffings and weezings and helps you to flee from unwanted wild encounters)

To remark here: Smoke Ball is obtained with extreme easy while surfing in Celadon City and using Thief (TM), Covet (some pokemon learn it via level up), Trick (Kadabra line and more) on wild Grimers and Koffings. They're tier 1-2. We can ignore Muk as it does not give them. However, keep in mind Grimer and Muk have Sticky Hold, so you can use a Pinsir with Mold Breaker (or any Mold Breaker pokemon) with Thief learned, such as Axew/evos or Cranidos/evos. Keep it to Pinsir so newbies in Kanto can also get it via Headbutts (when they're enabled again)/Safari.

- Acess to Trainers Valley (not 100% need because you can do what the guide says in any encounter, but highly recomended for maximum efficiency)

I'd argue that as mentioned above there are better places to find wild Magikarps. The earliest place in the game is Viridian City. Curiously, Magikarp has a Tier 0 spawn here: during Morning and Day it is the only pokemon that spawns when surfing there. Thus, you have around 2:30-3 approximate hours to hunt for Magikarps while no other pokemon spawns. This in my opinion is the best PRO spawn for it as it allows you (outside of the night time) to hunt it as a newbie with just 5 badges. You can purchase a Natu Synch in Trade Chat that has been caught in Route 28 as it is considered a Kanto pokemon. You can also headbutt for it throughout Kanto and pray to be lucky (or hunt Abra and Kadabra synchs with an Arena Trap Diglett lead in Route 25).

Aside from this, the best mid-lategame spawn is obviously Sootopolis surfing as Magikarp and Gyarados are Tier 0 pokemon there. It's very annoying to get there though, we can just circumvent it through Teleportation Quest. Sootopolis itself requires no sidequests.

As a small extra addition: If a newbie is reading the guide, I'd highly suggest capturing a wild Farfetch'd (or multiple) in Route 13 and leveling them up in that same route against Grass Types and Bug Types, then in Route 15 until level 45. It has an insane level-up moveset and it learns False Swipe at level 45, making it an insanely good and early False Swiper in your PRO adventure.

It was a good quick guide 🙂 keep it up!

@Bhimoso Thank you for your input!

I picked Rattata because it is the easiest pokemon to get for the method, but yes there are several pokes and moves people can use, i just tried to get everything to work as easy and cheapest as possible (apart from trainers valley).

Just to clear something, indeed the guide and the "as fast as possible" title was about the method for getting the pokemon with the hidden ability since its something that can be tedious and last forever to catch since theres no repel trick, and not about the soonest place to go to get it, the one i mentioned in the guide was my personal one but someone already mentioned a cheaper and earlier spot, and i recommend that spot over mine!

Well of course that's the point, otherwise your spot and mine are way better.
